1.1.1 Types of conformity Flashcards
What are the 3 types of conformity?
Compliance, Internalisation and identification.
Explain compliance.
When an individual is conforming to a group publicly, even though they disagree privately.
Explain internalisation.
When an individual is exposed to different views of a group and accepts them both publicly and privately.
Explain identification.
When an individual temporalily adopts the behaviour of a role model or group.
Example of compliance.
A person may say they are vegan because all their friends are, but then behind their backs they still eat meat.
Example of internalisation.
If all your friends are vegan and you decide to be one as well, changing your whole lifestyle and have no thoughts of going back to your old diet.
Example of identification.
You begin to dress like your friends because you admire the way they look or you eat vegan around the vegan friends but meat away from them.
