11.1 Return if an Ancient Killer Flashcards
What is tuberculosis?
A degenerative lung disease
What causes Tuberculosis?
Caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis
How many people carry TB?
2 billion
What are the symptoms of tuberculosis?
Cough that produces blood, fever, fatigue, and relentless wasting in which the patient gradually becomes thinner
What does it affect in a person?
Their lungs
What is drug-resistant tuberculosis?
Ones that cannot be cured by standard drug treatment
How is tuberculosis spread?
Through the air
What is Evolution?
A genetic change in a population of organisms
What can biologically evolve?
Individuals in populations
What are four observations that led to the inference of natural selection?
- Individuals within populations vary
- Some of the variation within individuals can be passed on to their offspring
- Populations of organisms produce more offspring than will survive
- Survival and reproduction are not random
What is fitness?
Relative survival and reproduction of one variant compared to others in the same population
What is an example of fitness?
Individuals with adaptations for a particular environment are more likely to survive and reproduce
What is adaptation?
Traits that increase individuals fitness in an environment
What is an example of adaptation?
Color or nectar production in flowers to help it be increase its attractive to pollinators
What is the result of natural selection?
- Favorable inherited variation tend to increase in frequency
- Unfavorable variations tend to be lost
- End result is a change in the traits of individuals in a population over generations
