1.1.1 Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes Flashcards
Where are Eukaryotic cells found?
Plants, animals, fungi and protists.
What is the size of Eukaryotic cells?
10-100 micrometers
1mm = 1000µm
What is a Eukaryote?
An organism made up of Eukaryotic cells
Where are Prokaryotic cells found?
Bacteria
What is the size of Prokaryotic cells?
0.1 - 5.0 micrometers
What is a prokaryote?
An organism made of Prokaryotic cells.
What are protists?
Single-celled organisms that are not plants, animals or fungi.
Algae is an example of a protist
Key features of a prokaryotic cell.
- Single DNA loop (no nucleus) in the cytoplasm.
- plasmids (single loops of DNA), can be replicated and move to other cells so DNA can be shared
- No mitochondria (respiration) or chloroplasts (photosynthesis)
Sub-cellular structures missing from prokaryotic cells that are found in eukaryotic cells.
Nucleus
Chloroplast
mitochondria
What do we mean by sub-cellular structures?
structures inside a cell
