What is a hardwood?
Wood from a deciduous tree, typically slow growth and expensive
Oak properties/characteristics/uses
Hard, tough / attractive grain / furniture flooring
Mahogany properties/characteristics/uses
Can be hard to work with / dark red colour, has an interlocking grain / indoor furniture, cabinets
Beech properties/characteristics/uses
Tough, hard / close grained, available steamed or unsteamed ( white or pink) / chairs, chopping boards
Jelutong properties/characteristics/uses
Easy to cut / fine texture, straight grain, white or straw coloured / mould making, wood carving
Balsa properties/characteristics/uses
Low density, lightweight / pinkish colour / model making, surfboard cores
What is softwood
From coniferous trees, fast growth and cheaper than hardwood
Pine/redwood properties/characteristics/uses
Straight grain, knotty / construction work, roof beams, timber frame
Cedar properties/characteristics/uses
Can corrode ferrous metals as it is acidic, low density, good sound damping / sheds, beehives
Larch properties/characteristics/uses
Hard, tough / attractive, goes silver outdoors / garden furniture, fencing
