11. Wave Motion Flashcards
What are waves?
Waves are a means by which energy may be transferred from one place to another as a result of oscillations. this takes place without the physical transfer of any material between points.
What is the order of electromagnetic waves with increasing wavelength: radiowaves, ultraviolet rays, gamma rays, x-rays, visible light, microwaves, infra-red radiation
radiowaves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet rays, x-rays, gamma rays
What is the wavelength of red and violet light?
red light : 700nm
violet light : 400nm
What is the difference between progressive waves and stationary waves?
Progressive waves are waves in which the energy is carried (from one point or another by means of vibrations or oscillations in the waves), whereas stationary waves are waves which the vibrational energy is stored.
What is a transverse wave?
A transverse wave is a wave in which the oscillations of the particles in the wave are at right angles to the direction of transfer of energy of the wave.
What is a longitudinal wave? What does it consist of?
A longitudinal wave is a wave in which the oscillations of the particle in the wave are along the direction of transfer of energy of the wave.
it consists of regions of compressions and rarefaction.
What is the formula of wave speed?
v = 𝛌/ T = f 𝛌
What is phase difference?
Phase difference is a measure of how much one wave is out of step with another. A phase difference of one cycle corresponds to 360° or 2∏
What is the condition for finding phase difference?
Phase difference can only be calculated for particles on waves of the same frequency.
What is phase angle?
The phase angle (from 0 to 2∏) gives a measure of the fraction of a cycle that has been completed by an oscillating particle by the wave.
What is the formula of phase difference? ( displacement-distance graph)
Δ𝟇 = Δx / 𝛌 ✖️ 2∏
Δx is the distance between the two particles
What is the formula of phase difference? ( displacement - time graph)
Δ𝟇 = Δt / T x 2∏
Δt is the difference in time of the 2 particles
What is intensity?
Intensity of a wave transfers energy - the intensity of a wave describes how much energy is transferred by the wave at a particular point.
Intensity = Power / Area
What is the relationship between intensity and amplitude of wave?
intensity is proportional to the square of its amplitude
I ∝ A²
What is polarisation?
A wave is said to be polarised when the oscillations of the wave is confined to one direction only, in a plane normal to the direction of the energy transferred of the wave.
