1.1: Water Flashcards
What is a dipole?
A dipole is a polar molecule which has a positive and negative charge.
What is a hydrogen bond?
A weak attractive force between a hydrogen atom (partially positive) and an atom with a partial negative charge.
Give an example of what a hydrogen atom may bond with.
Oxygen or nitrogen.
Is oxygen positive or negative? How many in water?
Negative, 1.
Is hydrogen positive or negative? How many in water?
Positive, 2.
Define water as a solvent.
Due to being polar, water molecules are attracted to charged particles.
Define water as having High Specific Heat Capacity.
Large amount of heat energy is needed to raise temperature due to hydrogen bonds restricting movement between water molecules. This keeps habitats stable.
Define High Latent heat of vaporisation.
Large amount of energy needed to change to vapour. Used in temperature control in the body through evaporation of sweat.
Define Cohesion.
Water molecules attract to each other and form a lattice. Useful for being drawn up a xylem.
Define Transparent.
Allows light to pass through so water plants can photosynthesise.
Condensation Reaction is?
When water is removed to attatch two particles.
Hydrolysis is when?
Water is added to break two particles apart.
