1.1: Protiens Flashcards
Name the groups in an amino acid.
Carbolxylic acid group, R group, hydrogen, and amino group.
What are amino acids joined by?
Peptide bond.
Peptide bonds are formed by?
Condensation reactions.
Bonds in a tertiary structure?
Hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, disulphide bridges and hydrophobic interactions.
Give the qualities of a fibrous protien and an example.
Insoluable and structural, collagen.
Give the qualities of a globular protien and an example.
Soluable and having 3D shapes, haemoglobin.
What is a primary stucture?
Amino acid chain.
What is a secondary structure?
Alpha helix and beta pleated sheet.
What is a tertiary structure?
3D globular shape.
What are proteins made of?
long, folded chains of amino acids folded to form a specific shape.
How many types of amino acids occur naturally?
20.
What is the basic monomer unit of a protein?
Amino acids.
Combined amino acids are called?
Polymer(s), called a polypeptide.
What are amino acids made of?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen.
What can proteins sometimes be made of?
Sulphur.
What are the properties of proteins determined by?
The aa (amino acid) sequence.
How does a condensation reaction work in a protein?
The OH from one protein and the H from another protein is removed to join the two proteins together.
What do two proteins form?
A dipeptide.
