Why do auditors need an understanding of the nature of the business and of the context in which it operates?
In order to be able to identify problem areas which might cause difficulties in collecting evidence or drawing assurance conclusions

- to identify and assess the risk of material misstatements in the financial statements
- to enable the auditor to design and perform further audit procedures
- to provide a frame or reference for exercising audit judgement e.g when setting audit materiality
