11. Thermal Physics Flashcards
Specific Heat Capacity
The energy needed to raise the temperature of unit mass of the substance by 1K without change of state.
Internal Energy
The sum of the random distribution of the kinetic and potential energies of an object’s molecules.
Heat Transfer
Convection conduction or radiation that occurs due to a temperature difference
Work done
When an object exerts a force on the other and makes it move
Absolute scale
Measured in terms of absolute zero and the triple point of water, 273.16K which is the temperature at which ice, water and water vapour coexist in thermal equilibrium.
Specific latent heat of fusion
Energy needed to change the state of unit mass of the substance from solid to liquid without change of temperature
Specific latent heat of vaporisation
Energy needed to change the state of unit mass of the substance from liquid to vapour without change of temperature
