1. Force And Momentum Flashcards
Impulse of a force
The average resultant force x the time for which it acts
Equal to the change of momentum of the object
The area under a force/time graph represents..
Change in momentum (the impulse of the force)
The Principle of Momentum
For a system of interacting objects, the total momentum remains constant, provided no external resultant forces act on the system.
Elastic Collisions
Collisions where there is no loss of kinetic energy
Totally Inelastic Collisions
A collision where the colliding objects stick together
Partially Inelastic Collision
A collision where colliding objects move apart and have less kinetic energy after the collision than before
Momentum
The product of an object’s mass and velocity (kgms^-1 or Ns)
Newton’s First Law of Motion
An object remains at rest or in uniform motion unless acted on by a force
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
The rate of change of momentum of an object is proportional to the resultant force on it
