1.1: Social influence Flashcards
Describe compliance
shallowest type, publically agree but privately disagree - do not actually agree but perform the behaviours anyway, temporary
Describe identification
medium level of conformity, act in the same way of the group because we value it, so private and public agreement, temporary
Describe internalisation
deepest form, publically and privately agree - actually agree with the majority, permanent change
Describe NSI (normative social influence)
want to be liked, majority view controls other group members and creates social pressure, greatest impact is on strangers
Describe ISI (informational social influence)
want to be right, conform because they think someone else has more knowledge, leads to internalisation, can occur with a persuasive minority or majority
Give two strengths of the dual process model
ISI: Lucas et al asked maths students questions that were either easy or hard and found greater conformity to incorrect answers when they were difficult and was most true for students who felt their ability was poor
NSI: Asch carried out interviews after his study and found some individuals went along with the group but still believed they were correct
