1.1 Osmosis Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The random movement of a substance from high to low concentration
What is plasmolysis?
When the cell membranes of plant cells come away from the cell wall due to dehydration so the plants wilt
What does it mean if a plant is turgid?
It is full of water so it is stiff
What does it mean if a plant is flaccid?
When the plant has a lack of water so it is wilting
What is a semi permeable membrane?
A substance with tiny holes that no molecule bigger than water can fit through
Describe the movement of water is osmosis
Down the concentration gradient, from high to low concentration, through a semi permeable membrane, random
Why does osmosis not happen in dead cells?
Because the tiny holes in the semi permeable membrane are closed up in the plasma membrane
What is lysis?
In dilute (not very strong, very watery) solutions the animal cells absorb the water to make the concentration normal again so they swell up and burst
What is crenation?
In concentrated (very strong, not very watery) solutions, animal cells put water back into the solution to make the concentration normal again which causes the cells to shrink
Why are cells in distiller water safe from lysis or crenation?
There is an isotonic water balance
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water across a partially permeable membrane
