1.1 Materials and their Applications Flashcards
What is a natural fibre?
a fibre that comes from a natural cellulose or protein source
What are examples of natural plant/cellulosic fibres?
Cotton, linen and ramie
What are examples of natural animal/protein fibres?
Wool and silk
What are examples of natural animal hair/protein fibres?
Cashmere, mohair and angora
What is a regenerated fibre?
a fibre made from natural cellulose that has been chemically modified
What are examples of regenerated fibres?
Viscose and acetate
What are examples of new generation lyocell fibres?
Modal, lyocell and tencel
What is a synthetic fibre?
a fibre made entirely from synthetic polymers based on petrochemicals
What is a smart material?
a material that is able to react to external stimuli or changes in its environment without human intervention
What are different types of smart materials?
Reactive materials, photochromic dyes and phase changing materials
What is a modern material?
a material that has been developed through the invention of the new or improved process
What are different types of modern materials?
Microfibres, micro encapsulated fibres and fabrics and nano fibres
How is flammability tested?
record how long it takes for a piece of fabric to be set on fire
How is crease resistance tested?
fabric folded in half and and place under weights then calculate the difference between the corners
How is shrink resistance tested?
mark a 10cm square, retain a control sample and wash the remaining samples at different temperatures, dry and iron and work out the percentage of shrinkage
