1.1 Introduction To Cell Physiology And Pharmacology Flashcards
What does MEF require in a living cell?
Substrate supply system
Product distribution system (extra/intra)
Waste removal system
Reliable and responsive control systems that monitor and adjust when required
What is the aim of living systems?
Maintain/maximise dynamic order through regulating flow
Minimise entropy!
How do we regulate flow to result in good health?
Goldilocks
Right place, right amount, right time, right environment leads to good health
How are signalling molecules classified?
Endogenous - within body
Exogenous I - natural (plant based)
Exogenous II - synthetic (man made)
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining optimal environment for cells to function
Intracellular process optimally takes place when extracellular environment is stable
Monitoring and adjusting of environment according to demand/disturbance
What are the control system components?
Variable - system needing control producing a measurable system output (SO)
Sensor - detects SO
Set Point/comparator - SP compared to SO
Difference error signal - negative feedback signal SP-SO
Controller - generates amplified signal to bring SO back to SP
Effector - components that bring about this change
What temperature causes hypothermia?
35
What temp do you get hyperthermia?
38-40
Define synergistically and antagonistically.
- Various parts working together to produce enhanced results
- Opposing
