11. Interocclusal Appliances Flashcards
Soft occlusal appliances are indicated for
- Younger children (doesn’t interfere with skeletal development)
- Cost
- Temporary splint
What are the different types of hard splints
- Stabilization splint
- Repoisitoning splint
- Deprogramming splint
A stabilization splint in (full/partial) coverage? Reposition splint? Deprogramming splint?
Full… both…. partial
Stablization splint is made for the (maxillary/mandibular) arch
either
Complications with stabilization splints
- Occlusal changes if worn continuously
- Increased caries/perio risk
Repositioning splint that is (full/partial) coverage is not indicated and why
partial
-Risk for causing iatrogenic malocclusion
A full coverage repositioning splint should be worn how often
all the time even when eating
How can you confirm if the repositioning splint has the disc in the correct position
confirm with imaginign
Goal of repositioning splint
wean back to original occlusion
Reposition splint is a (permanent/temporary) tx
temporary- joint sounds will come back
Complications of repositioned splints are
permanent changes in occlusion
Why do interocclusal appliances work
- Occlusal disengagement
- Vertical dimension theory
- Maxillomandibular rearrangement (horizontal)
- TMJ repositioning in the fossa related to the disc
- Cognitive awareness
- Improves breathing during sleep
Why do we brux
- Nature’s way of grinding away interferences
- Unconscious expression of repressed anger
- Result of stress
Contraversies associated with splints
- Equally as effective in pain control as “placebo splint” (nonoccluding) and an occlusal splint
- Occlusal design doesn’t matter (posterior guidance is as effective as group function which as effective as canine guidance)
What is neuromuscular dentistry
correct malalignment of the jaw and produce a balanced bite
