Q

What is HCI?

A

Study of human & intelligent artifact interaction. Discipline concerned with design, evaluation & implementation of interactive computing systems for human use, and a study of phenomena surrounding H-C interaction.

Q

What is Kiousis’ view on Interactivity?

A

There are features of technology that enable interaction, but it is the human perception of the interactive technological features that make them interactive.

Q

What is Gibson’s view on Affordance?

A

An object’s affordance exists independently from the actor’s ability to perceive it (usefulness)

Q

What is Norman’s view on Affordance?

A

An actor needs to cognitively manifest the existence of an affordance; affordance is a perceived construct.

Q

What are 2 principles of affordances?

A

1) Affordances need to be perceptible: design of object must communicate to the user how to use it (can be unintentional or must be put inside)
2) Affordances need to be intuitive: signal instead of explicitly telling the user what to do

Q

What is the Computer Are Social Actors (CASA) Paradigm?

A

Social cues from computers trigger mindless responses from humans as if the computers were social actors (unconscious & does not come from a belief that they are communicating with programmers)

Q

How to carry out CASA Research?

A

1) Find the literature of social rule governing human-to-human interaction
2) Replace a human partner with a technology
3) Test the re-written rule
4) Draw out implications for theory & design
