1.1 Hardware - Embedded Systems Flashcards
What is an Embedded System?
Mix of hardware and components to perform a specific task. It is a different type of computer system.
Are Embedded System stand alone?
No they are part of a larger system.
What is the software written on Embedded System called?
Firmware
Who programs the software on Embedded System and where is it stored?
Programmed by the manufacturer and it is stored on the ROM or in flash memory.
What are the positives of Embedded System over general purpose computers?
Limited Nr of functions makes them cheaper to design and build.
Require less power. Sometimes they even run on batteries.
Don’t need much processing power so it can run on cheap low end processors.
Most Embedded Systems are reactive. What does this mean?
They react to exterior factors such as temperature, weight, vibration & Air Quality. They will record this data and react accordingly such as turning on motors or sending messages.
Where are Embedded Systems used in Electronics?
Phones, Consoles, printers, TVs, Digital Cameras
Where are Embedded Systems used in In the Home?
Washing MAchine, Microwaves, Refrigerators, Dish Washers & Air Conditioners.
Where are Embedded Systems used in Medical Equipment?
CT Scanners, ECG, MRI Scanners, Blood Pressure Monitors, Heartbeat Monitors
