1.1 Hardware - Additional Hardware Components Flashcards
Name 3 different types of additional hardware.
Motherboard
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)
Sound Card
What are the 2 types of GPUs
Dedicated
Integrated
Describe a general GPU do?
Microprocessor that performs calculations in order to display a high-quality image on the screen.
What did the GPU replace and why?
The CPU was initially in charge of the graphics but as graphics became more complex(3D) a component dedicated to that was introduced and this let the CPU focus on other tasks.
Explain the basics about the 4 additional hardware components.
Motherboard - Main Circuit board of the computer that holds the CPU, memory, connections and can link to other devices.
Integrated GPU - GPU built into the motherboard that uses the RAM. Cheaper.
Dedicated GPU - Separate graphics card with its own video memory. Expensive.
Sound Card - Typically part of the motherboard but can be separate. Allows for recording of sound and output of sound.
Give more detailed information about the 4 Additional Hardware Components
Motherboard - Main Circuit board of the computer and has space for the CPU, ROM and RAM expansion. Also provides ports on the side for USB ports or PCI slots.
Integrated GPU - A GPU that is built into the motherboard and uses the RAM. This produces less heat and uses less power. It is a cheap option for things such as playing/editing videos.
Dedicated GPU - A GPU that is a separate component and needs connecting to the motherboard. It uses more energy and produces much more heat so it will require a cooling device such as a heat sink or fans. It provides much better and complex graphics making it great for graphic designers or gamers. EXPENSIVE
Sound Card - Can be already part of the motherboard or be separate to fit a PCI slot. This allows for audio to be recorded through a microphone and sound to be output through speakers by converting analogue input signals into digital data and vice versa.
