Describe the “Old Regime” (Ancien Regime) in France in terms of the three estates and various social-political grievances, tensions, and resentments in French society

A

a. Three Estates: 3 classes in which France was divided. Upper two classes (1 and 2) comprised of nobility and clergy. 3rd classes comprised of everyone else-the majority. The upper 2 had considerably more benefits, rights and privileges than the lower third.
b. Tensions/Resentments: The nobility vs. power of the monarchy. Old noble families vs. more recently ennobled families resented each other. Bourgeoisie resented aristocratic barriers to their social advancement and political power. The 3rd class was sick of it!

Q

Explain how the 18th century debt crisis led France toward revolution

A

a. King realized that the only way to relieve debt was to abolish tax exemption privileges to the 1 and 2. King repeatedly called for an Estates General meeting which represented the 3 classes to vote and solution was denied several times. The upper 2 won out due to more representation than the majority 3. This led to change!
