When does dissociation generally occur?
Significant trauma, particularly during childhood
Dissociative fugue
Sudden unexpected travel away from home, accompanied by amnesia for identity or other autobiographical information
Who is dissociative disorder more common in?
Women
Abreaction
Strong emotional reaction patients may experience when retrieving traumatic memories
Derealization
They may experience the world around them as though they were in a dream or movie
When do transient experiences of depersonalization or derealization commonly occur?
Times of stress!
Dissociative Identity disorder
The presence of more than one distinct personality state as a result of a fragmented sense of self
Who does DID generally develop in?
*Dissociative identity disorder is also known as multiple personality disorder
