What is a culture?
The whole system of behaviour and beliefs of a group. E.G. Language
What are values?
Values are beliefs that society sees as important. E.G. Hygiene. They are relative and change over time.
What are norms?
Norms are expected patters of behaviour that are based on values. E.G. Joining the back of the queue. They are relative and change over time.
What is intercultural diversity?
Cultural diversity seen between cultures.
What is intracultural diversity?
Cultural diversity seen within cultures.
What is a subculture?
A culture within a culture - a smaller grouping of people who share the same norms and values within a wider culture.
What is cultural hybridity?
Cultural hybridity is when cultures merge, it is often used in relation to second or third generation immigrants who mix aspects of their parent’s culture with British culture. E.G. Brasians.
What is high culture?
These are products or activities that are seen to have very high status. E.G. Ballet
What is popular culture?
These are products and activities that are enjoyed by most people. E.G. Watching football. It is seen as inferior to high culture.
What is a consumer culture?
Consumer goods are widely available which leads to excessive consumption and debt that is seen as normal. Also leads to conspicuous consumption where individuals consume branded products to gain status.
What is global culture?
Cultural products and activities becoming universal and are identical across countries, causing national cultures lose their distinctiveness. E.G. McDonald’s.
What is a global village?
The world has become a smaller place due to the internet and the media.
