What does Genesis 1 describe?
God’s creation of the universe in 6 days using the power of his word to bring things into existence.
What does Genesis say about humans?
- Humans are made in the image of God ‘imago-dei’ (have an innate dignity to be respected) ‘breathed into his nostrils the breath of life’
- Humans are sacred, humans are the pinnacle of all creation ‘very good’
- Humans are free, humans alone have a moral conscience ‘you may freely eat of every tree in the garden’
What does Genesis say about God?
- God is the creator, the only creator that created everything
- God is transcendent (he is beyond all things, he is outside of the Universe)
- God is omnipotent, he speaks and creates ‘ex nihilo’ (from nothing)
God is benevolent (kind and well meaning), ‘it is not good that the man should be alone’ - God is transcendent, beyond human understanding ‘let there be light’
