Squamous cell carcinoma

Oral cavity

What are the risk factors for h/n cancers?
Alcohol AND smoking
Old age
Being male
Epstein-Barr virus infection (nasopharyngeal cancer)
Human papilloma virus (HPV) - oesophageal cancer
Exposure to UV - lip cancer
What are the common initial manifestations of h/n cancer?
Painful, mucosal ulceration/lesion in oral cavity
Hoarse voice, dysphagia/odynophagia (painful swallow)
Otalgia (ear pain)
Cervical lymphadenopathy
Why does pharyngeal/laryngeal cancer present with otalgia?
Mandibular (V3) innervates ear as well as oral cavity, refferred pain
What are the risk factors for thyroid cancers?
Irradiation exposure
Family history
