11 Body Systems Flashcards
Name the 11 body systems
Skeletal, Reproductive, Nervous, Endocrine, Integumentary, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Urinary, Muscular, Lymphatic and Immune, Digestive
Name the 4 basic tissues
Epithelial, connective, nervous, muscle
What are the 6 levels of structural organisation
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, system, organismal
What are the main structures of the integumentary system?
Epidermis - top layer of skin
Dermis-middle layer. Has hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Sweat glands. Nails. Sensory receptors
Hypodermis - Bottom layer
What are the primary functions of the Epidermis?
Epidermis provides layer of protection between the outiside and deeper tissues. Produces vitamin D
What are the primary functions of the Dermis?
Hair- hair provides protection and have sensation. Sebaceous glands secret lubricant to hair shaft
Sweat glands- help thermoregulation
Nails- stiffen and protect digits
Sensory receptors- detect sensations eg. temperature, touch, pain
What are the primary functions of the Hypodermis?
Fat storage
What are the main structures of the muscular system?
Skeletal muscle, axial muscles, appendicular muscle, tendons, aponeuroses
What are the primary functions of skeletal muscles
The skeletal muscles control skeletal movement, control entries and exits, produce heat, protect soft tissue, support skeleton
What are the primary functions of the axial muscles
Provide support and positioning of the axial sleleton
What is the primary function of the appendicular muscles
Support and move limbs
Describe the function and shape of tendons and aponeuroses
Tendons are rope-like connections between muscle and bone
Aponeuroses are sheet-like connections between muscle and bone
What are the main structures of the skeletal system?
Cartilage and joints, axial skeleton, appendicular skeleton, bones and bone marrow (red + yellow)
What are the primary functions of the axial skeleton
Protects brain, spinal cord, organs and soft tissues. Supports weight of lower limbs
What are the primary functions of the appendicular skeleton
Support and position of external limbs
What are the primary functions of bones and bone marrow (red + yellow)
Bones store minerals.
Red marrow has RBC production (flat bones)
Yellow marrow has fat stores (long bones)
Name the structures of the Nervous system
Central nervous system, Peripheral nervous system and special senses
What are the primary functions of the central nervous system?
The brain. Complex integrative activities (voluntary and involuntary)
The spinal cord. Relay channel. Less complex integrative activities
Special senses. Sight, optic nerve
What are the primary functions of the peripheral nervous system?
Sends information around the body to the CNS.
special senses, smell, taste, hear
Name the structures of the endocrine system and their location within the body
Brain- pineal gland, hypothalamus/pituitary gland
Neck- thyroid gland, parathyroid gland
Sternum- thymus
Kidneys- adrenal gland
Pancreas
Gonads
What are the primary functions of the pineal, hypothalamus/ pituitary gland?
Pineal- influences day/ night rhythm
Hypothalamus/pituitary- secret several hormones which influence other endocrine glands
What are the primary functions of the thyroid and parathyroid glands
Thyroid- secrets thyroxine, response for metabolic rate
Parathyroid- controls calcium levels
