1.1 Atomic Structure (electronic structure) Flashcards
What are electron shells defined by?
The principal quantum number (n)
What n number does the lowest energy shell have?
1n
What is the rule with n numbers?
The higher the n the further from the nucleus
What is the definition of a sub shell?
Smaller shells in electron shells with a lower difference in energy e.g. N3 had 3 subshells
What are orbitals?
Compose subshells
Have the same energy as other orbitals in the same subshells
How many electrons can each subshell hold?
2
What are the first three subshells called?
S,P,D
How many orbitals does each subshell have?
S = 1
P = 3
D = 5
What order are obitals filled in (generally)?
From the lowest energy (s) to the highest (d)
What is the exception to the filling order of electrons in order of energy?
4 s once full has more energy than 3d
What is the Hunds rule?
Electrons occupy orbitals on theiir own and will only pair up when no empty orbitals are available
