1.1 Flashcards
Where are observations of the solar system and the galaxies carried out from?
Earth or space
What are observations made with? What may they detect?
Telescopes that may detect visible light or other electromagnetic radiations (radio waves,X-rays from space)
What do these observations provide?
Evidence for changes in the universe
What is the Doppler effect
If a wave source is moving relative to an observer, there will be a change in the observed wavelength and frequency
Red shift
The further away stars or galaxies are,the more their light is red shifted,
This indicates that distant galaxies are moving away from us.
The further away one is,the faster its moving away
Solar system structure
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
The mantle
Beneath the earth
Flows slowly
Outer crust
Quite thin
Outer core
Molten liquid
Inner core
A solid
Atmosphere
Relatively thin layer of gases around the outside
what is evidence for big bang
cosmic background radiation
what do ground based telescopes emit?
visible light
radio waves
microwaves
