Antihypertensive
Used to decrease blood pressure, accomplished by:
-CNS relaxant
-decrease action of the pump (beta blockers)
-decrease tone in blood vessels (ACE inhibitors)
-decrease fluid volume (blood) (diuretics)
-combination of these
Anti-inflammatory non-steroidal
Inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins and useful in treating arthritis, gout, other inflammatory conditions (NSAIDS)
Anti-inflammatory steroidal
Used to reduce severe symptoms of arthritis, asthma, endocrine disorders, neoplastic disease
Anti-lipidemic
Reduces plasma levels of various lipoproteins thought to promote the development of atherosclerosis
Antipsychotic
Used to treat psychotics (schizophrenia, organic psychosis, bipolar, ect)
Antipyretic
Reduces fever by acting on the hypothalamus
Antispasmodic
Relaxes smooth muscle tone. Relieves pain due to peptic ulcer disease, diverticulitis, biliary colic, dysmenorrhea, prostatic hypertrophy
Barbiturate
Depresses the CNS; produces a sedative effect
Benzodiazepine
Appears to work on the limbic system of the brain to decrease anxiety (also some increase in seizure threshold)
Beta blocker
Blocks beta receptors; decreases heart rate, contractility, conduction, irritability
