1-10 Flashcards
Analgesic
Interferes with the perception of pain (aspirin, ibuprofen) or that relieves pain, without loss of consciousness
Alkalinizing agent
Combines with hydrogen ions to increase blood pH or make it more alkaline
Antacid
An alkaline substance that may be used to “buffer” pH; used for relief of symptoms associated with hyperacidity and peptic ulcer disease
Antianginal
Home medication used to treat angina by dilating systemic and coronary arteries and decreasing systemic vascular resistance
Dilating systemic vessels decreases preload and after load, decreasing stress on the heart
Antibiotic
Used to stop the growth of (bacteriostatic) or to kill (bacteriocidal) bacteria
Anticoagulant
A drug that prevents or delays blood coagulation by inhibiting or preventing the formation of one or more of the clotting (does not thin blood)
Anticonvulsant
Suppresses seizures and relaxes smooth and skeletal muscles;
Acts by preventing excessive electrical discharge of seizure focus in the brain and by decreasing that stimulus to the surrounding tissue (raising the seizure threshold)
Antidiarrheal
Agents that slow or inhibit intestinal motility
Antiemetic
Drug that treats or prevents nausea and vomiting
Antihistamine
Counteracts an allergic reaction by blocking histamine receptors
(Usually does not block the release of histamine, just its action at the receptor sites)
