Adolescence
The period between puberty and adulthood (~10 - 20 years)
What are the phases of life?
Childhood, adolescence, and adulthood
Puberty
a process needed for reproduction, and takes nearly 4 years
Physical Gender Development Differences
Females usually mature sooner than men by around 2 years
What are the Primary Sex Characteristics
maturing of eggs (female) and maturing of sperm (male). You cannot see these with the naked eye.
What are the Secondary Sex Characteristics
Body hair, physical changes, voice changes, height. These are visible and noticeable.
What are cognitive changes
The development allows complex and abstract thinking. The frontal lobe isn’t fully developed which may lead to risky behavior
Social Changes
Changes for how we interact with those around us (with a greater interest in friends and family.
Parental Relationships
GENERALLY a stable relationship despite public perception. Conflicts are often minor issues and major opinions generally match with family.
Peer Relationships
The relationship with others. Homophily. Can involve peer pressure
Homophily
The tendency to spend time with like-minded people
What is Identity?
The sense and understanding of who you are aside from other parental influence.
What was Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory?
A theory that psychosocial development happens over time and can change at any time.
