1.1-1.2: The Study of Life Flashcards
What are the 5 steps in the Scientific Method?
- Ask or identify a problem.
- Form a testable hypothesis.
- Conduct a controlled experiment.
- Record and analyze data/results.
- Develop a conclusion.
What is a theory?
A well tested explaination that unifies a broad range of observations.
What is the goal of science?
The goal of science is investigate, understand, and explain the natural world. Also to use explainations in the natural world.
Name the Characteristics of Life.
- Made up of cells
- Can reproduce
- Have DNA
- Can grow and develop
- Can obtain and use materials and energy
- Can respond to changes in the environment
- Can maintain a stable internal environment
- Can change over time
What is a metabolism?
When living things take outside materials and transfer it into energy (e.g. eating food = energy)
What does it mean to evolve?
To change over time.
What are molecules?
Atoms that make up living things.
What are cells?
The smallest working units of life.
What are groups of cells called?
Tissues or organs.
What is an organism?
An individual living thing.
What is a population?
A group of one type of organism living in the same place at the same time.
What is a community?
Different populations living in the same place at the same time.
What is an ecosystem?
A community and it’s nonliving (abiotic) surroundings.
What are biomes?
Ecosystems that have the same climate –> desert, tundra, rainforest.
What is the biosphere?
The layer of life around the Earth that contains all the biomes.
