Q

Wound Healing-Three Phases/Stages

A

FIRST Phase/Stage:Inflammatory phase or (defensive phase or reaction)
Second Phase/Stage: Proliferative Phase or regeneration or reparative phase.

Q

The body’s initial reaction to the insult is inflammation. This phase is characterized by edema (swelling), erythema (redness of the skin), heat and pain. This phase typically lasts from 4-6 days, however it can last up to 2 weeks.

limit tissue damage, remove injured or damaged cells, and repair the injured tissue. This begins immediately and it’s the body’s defense in righting the wrong.

typically lasts from 4-24 days, however it can last much, much longer depending on what is inhibiting wound healing.

This process involves the body reacting to specifically repair the wound by replacing damaged tissue.

Q

is a collagen matrix which contains different types of cells that contribute to wound healing, such as: endothelial cells, fibroblasts, lymphocytes, platelets, and epidermal cells. This tissue has a red, beefy, shiny, granular appearance. As this type of tissue proliferates, fibroblasts stimulate the ongoing production of collagen. Collagen is what gives tissue it’s tensile strength and ultimately, it’s structure.

Q

epithelial margins will begin to migrate toward the center of the wound; This process is sometimes referred to as a “contraction” of the wound… where the surface area of the wound reduces in size. When epithelialization is complete, a scar results.

Q

Why don’t we back stage pressure ulcers?

A

Because it would get too complicated

Q

This final phase of wound healing can last from 21 days to 2 years.

Primarily the collagen fibers continue to reorganize, remodel, mature and gain tensile strength.
