10.7-The Reproductive Hormones Flashcards
Gonads
The gonads are the primary source of sex hormones. It is an organ that produces gametes; a testis or ovary.
Androgens
Androgens are a group of sex hormones. They help start puberty and play a role in reproductive health and body development. All genders make androgens, but males make more of them. Testosterone is the most common androgen.
Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone(GnRH)
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone is a releasing hormone responsible for the release of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone from the anterior pituitary. GnRH is a tropic peptide hormone synthesized and released from GnRH neurons within the hypothalamus.
Oogenesis
Oogenesis is the process of formation of female gametes. It is the type of gametogenesis through which ova or the female gametes are formed, and this female gamete is known as an ovum.
Menopause
Menopause is a point in time 12 months after a woman’s last period. The years leading up to that point, when women may have changes in their monthly cycles, hot flashes, or other symptoms, are called the menopausal transition or perimenopause. The menopausal transition most often begins between ages 45 and 55.
Menstrual cycle
The menstrual cycle is the monthly series of changes a woman’s body goes through in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. Each month, one of the ovaries releases an egg, which is a process called ovulation. At the same time, hormonal changes prepare the uterus for pregnancy.
Testosterone
The main male sex hormone, which stimulates and controls the development of male secondary sexual characteristics.
Spermatogenesis
Spermatogenesis is the production of sperm from the primordial germ cells. Once the vertebrate PGCs arrive at the genital ridge of a male embryo, they become incorporated into the sex cords.
