[10.5] quantitative investigations of variation Flashcards
1
Q
what is intra-species variation?
A
variation within species
2
Q
what causes intra-specific variation?
A
different alleles (different versions of the same gene)
3
Q
what is inter-species variation?
A
variation between species
4
Q
what causes inter-species variation?
A
different genes
5
Q
what does successful sampling involve?
A
- selecting a group of organisms to study which are representative of the population
-
randomly sampling to avoid sample bias
> eg. choosing sites that are interesting, easy to get to, show greater variation
6
Q
how could you select a random sample within a field?
A
- create an x and y axis
- use a computer to generate random numbers
- sample at those co-ordinates
the larger the sample, the more reliable the data will be
7
Q
what is a belt transect?
A
placing and surveying a quadrat next to the line at regular intervalas
8
Q
what is is a line transect?
A
making a note of what species is touching the tape at regular intervals
