10.3 - Hypothalamus Pituitary Connection Flashcards
1
Q
Where does the hypothalamus produce hormones? What are they? Where are they stored?
A
Produces hormones (Oxytocin and ADH) in neurosecretory cells
- > these hormones are carried to the posterior lobe of pituitary via nerve cells
- > these hormones are then stored in the posterior lobes to be released in blood when needed
2
Q
Where are releasing hormones produced and transported to? What are they?
A
In the neurosecretory cells in the hypothalamus
-> releasing are secreted in the blood and carried to anterior lobe of pituitary
- TRH and TSH
- GnRH and FSH, LH
- ACRH and ACTH
3
Q
Why do releasing hormones target anterior lobe?
A
Direct it to secrete a hormone in the blood
4
Q
When will hypothalamus release TRH?
A
Low body temperature
5
Q
What are the 3 releasing hormones produced by hypothalamus?
A
TRH, ACRH, GnRH
6
Q
Differences between anterior and posterior pituitary?
A
- Posterior neurons extend into posterior lobe, anterior does not (stop at end of hypothalamus)
- Posterior hormones enter through nerves, anterior hormones enter through blood
