10.2.3 - Alcohol Reactions Flashcards
Complete combustion
Alcohol + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
Incomplete combustion
Alcohol + oxygen -> carbon monoxide + water
OR
Alcohol + oxygen -> carbon + water
Oxidation - conditions
Presence of oxidising agent:
- Potassium manganate (VII)
- Acidified potassium dichromate (VI)
Partial oxidation - primary alcohol
Primary alcohol -> aldehyde (+ hydrogen)
Full oxidation - primary alcohol
Primary alcohol -> carboxylic acid
Oxidation - secondary alcohol
Secondary alcohol -> ketone (C=O in the middle of the carbon chain)
Oxidation - tertiary alcohol
No reaction. Tertiary alcohols can’t be oxidised.
Acidified potassium manganate (VII) colour change in reduction
(when manganate reduced to manganese)
Purple -> colourless
Acidified potassium dichromate (VI) colour change in reduction
(dichromate reduced to Cr^3+ ion)
Orange -> green
Esterification
Alcohol + carboxylic acid -> ester + water (condensation reaction)
Esterification conditions
Strong acid catalyst, e.g. sulfuric acid
