10.2 Brain Structure and Neurotransmitters Flashcards
What comprises the central nervous system?
brain and spinal cord
What comprises the peripheral nervous system?
axons, dendrites, and cell bodies outside of the CNS
What are nuclei?
neuronal cell bodies that are bunched together
What are ganglia?
clump of gray matter found in PNS
What are the three subdivisions of the brain?
forebrain
midbrain
hindbrain
What is cerebrospinal fluid?
clear liquid that serves various functions such as shock absorption and exchange of nutrients and waste
What is the function of the spinal cord?
pathway for information to and from the brain; site for information integration and processing, simple spinal reflexes and primitive processes
What is the hindbrain composed of?
medulla, pons, and cerebellum
What is the medulla?
area of the brain that connects the spinal cord and functions to relay information between other areas of the brain, regulates vital autonomic functions, and contains the respiratory rhythmicity center
What is the pons?
connection point between the brainstem and the cerebellum that functions to control some autonomic functions and coordinates movement
What is the cerebellum?
integrating center where complex movements are coordinated
What is the midbrain?
relay for visual and auditory information
What does the brainstem include?
medulla, pons, and midbrain
What is the purpose of the brainstem?
contains important processing centers and relays information to and from the cerebellum and cerebrum
What does the forebrain include?
diencephalon
telencephalon
