10.12-10.14 Translation Flashcards
Ribosome(Mixture of protein and ribosomal RNA rRNA)
Ribosomes are the sites at which the genetic code is actually read by a cell. mRNA is like a dollar bill and ribosome is like a vending machine.
tRNA
It translates from the language of nucleotides into the language of amino acids and proteins.
tRNA
On the top of the tRNA is an amino acid. On the other end is a specific sequence of three nitrogenous bases(anti codon)
The first amino acid is MET
The first triplet codon is AUG. So the anticodon is UAC.
Anticodons
The matching pieces of the puzzle: a tRNA with a three bases that will pair with the condon sequence.
Initiation of Polypeptide Synthesis
The mRNA, the first tRNA and the ribosomal subunits come together.
Elongation
A succession of tRNAs add their amino acids to the polypeptide chain as the mRNA is moved through the ribosome, one codon at a time.
Termination
The ribosome recognizes a stop codon. The polypeptide is terminated and released.
Primary-Sequence
One amino acid covalently bonded to another and that one to another, in a single file.
Secondary-Sheets and Spirals
Alpha helices and beta sheets held together by hydrogen bonds
Tertiary
One folded amino acid chain held together by disulfide bonds
Quaternary
Several folded amino acid chains (subunits) held together by hydrophobic interactions
