101 Safety Fundamentals Flashcards
ORM
A decision making tool used at all levels to increase operational effectiveness.
o Make informed decisions and minimize risk
ORM 5 Step Process
o Identify Hazards-list all hazards and possible causes
o Assess Hazards-degree of risk in terms of probability and severity.
o Make risk decisions-decide if benefit of operation outweighs the risk.
o Implement controls-measures taken to eliminate hazards or reduce risk.
o Supervise-monitor for changes.
4 Principles of ORM
o Accept risk when benefit outweighs cost
o Accept no unnecessary risk
o Anticipate and manage risk by planning
o Make risk decision at the right level
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
o Head protection-helmets protect against impact, penetration and shock
o Hearing protection-84 dBA (8 hrs), 140 dB peak. Double for 104 dBA (8 hrs)
o Foot protection
o Eye protection
Hazardous Material
because of quantity, concentration, or characteristics, is a hazard to human health or the environment
Hazardous Waste
discarded hazmat
MSDS
material safety data sheet contains composition, characteristics, hazards, and precautions
Hazard
a condition with potential to cause injury or death
Risk
expression of possible loss in terms of severity and probability
Risk Assessment
detecting hazards
