101 Safety Fundamentals Flashcards
What is the concept of ORM
Increases our ability to make informed decisions by providing the best baseline of knowledge and experience available.
It minimizes risk to acceptable levels, commensurate with mission accomplishment.
What is a Hazard?
A condition with the potential to cause personal injury or death, property damage or mission degradation.
What is a Risk?
An expression of possible loss in terms of severity and probability.
What is a Risk Assessment?
The process of detecting hazards and assessing associated risks.
What’s the five step process of ORM?
I- Identify Hazards A- Asses Hazards M- Make Risk Decisions I- Implement Controls S- Supervise
What are the four principles of ORM?
Accept risk when benefits outweigh the cost
Accept no unnecessary risk
Anticipate and manage risk by planning
Make risk decisions at the right level
PPE for the Head
Safety helmet which protect against impact, penetration and electric shock.
PPE for Hearing
Hearing protection should be worn when noise levels are greater than 84 dBA(8 hour TWA) sound level and 140dBA peak sound pressure.
When should double hearing protection be worn and what does it consist of?
It should be worn in all areas where noise levels exceed 104dBA (8 hour TWA). It consists of insert type and circumaural hearing protection.
PPE Foot Protection
Foot-hazardous operations are those which have a high incidence of, or a potential for foot and or toe injuries.
What operations require foot protection?
Maintenance Supply Transportation Construction Material Handling Aircraft Maintenance
PPE for Eyes
PPE for eyes shall be provided at the governments expense. Workers, supervisors, or visitors shall wear eye protection when entering an eye-hazardous area or hazard radius.
Define Hazardous Material
Any material that, because of its quantity, concentration, or physical or chemical characteristics, may pose a substantial hazard to human health or the environment when incorrectly used, purposefully released, or accidentally spilled.
Define Hazardous Waste
A discarded material (liquid, solid, or gas) which meets the definition of HM and/or is designated as a hazardous waste by the EPA or state authority.
What is the purpose and information contained in the MSDS
Are technical bulletins containing information about materials, such as composition, chemical, and physical characteristics, health and safety hazards, and precautions, for safe handling and use.
