What is the discrete emotions theory?
- emotions are innate (from birth from genes)
- automatic, not based on cognition (thinking)
- each emotion has its own set of bodily and facial reactions
What is the functionalist perspective?
- we experience emotions to achieve a goal
- emotions are not discrete (separate) and vary depending on the social environment
What are the six basic emotions?
- fear
- sadness
- happiness
- anger
- surprise
- disgust
When do babies smile in the first month of life?
in REM sleep
When do babies start showing social smiles?
by the 3rd of month
When do babies smile in the second month of life?
when they are stroked gently
What does the timeine of the devleopment of happiness look like?
- 1st month - REM sleep
- 2nd month - stroked gently
- 3rd month - social smiles
- 4th month - laugh at pleasure
- 5th month - understand “funny”
When do infants start to laugh?
after about 3 or 4 months of age, infants laugh at pleasure
When do infants start to laugh at funny things?
after 5 months of age
At what age do children begin to understand irony?
as young as 3 years of age
What is the first thing that children become afraid of?
strangers
When does fear develop?
after 7 months of age
When do children normally experience separation anxiety?
between 8 and 24 months of age
What do preschool-aged children tend to fear?
imaginary things (monsters, ghosts, etc.)
What do young schoolchildren (ages 5 to 6 years) tend to fear?
they understand the difference between real and imaginary, so they are more afraid of animals and darkness
What do school-age children tend to fear?
real-life issues like tests, grades, health, being hurt, etc.
How do infants normally express anger before their 1st birthday?
as a mix of sadness and anger as a general state of distress that they can’t tell the differnece between sadness and anger
When does children’s tendency to react with anger peaks?
between 18 to 24 months of age
Why do children stop being so angry after 24 months of age?
they are able to express themselves with language more, rather than with emotions
At what age do children stop being angry if they think the other person did someting by accident?
young school age (5 or 6 years of age)
When do infants exhibit sadness or anger?
- painful
- no control
When do infants begin to express surprise?
starting from 6 months of age
Why is surprise important?
it helps infants learn because it tells them when the world is different from their expectations
What do young children first direct the emotion of disgust towards?
food
