10.1 - Classification Flashcards
1
Q
What do classification systems do?
A
- Sorts living organisms into groups
- organisms within each group share characteristics
2
Q
What are the taxonomic groups?
A
Hierachical (Linnean) groups of classification
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Largest → Smallest
3
Q
Give reasons for classifiying organisms.
A
- Identify Species - allow organisms to be easily identified
- Predict Charactersitics - members of a taxonomic group may have similar characteristics.
- Finding Evolutionary Links - species of a group will share characteristics possibly due to evolution from common ancestors.
4
Q
What are the benefits of a single classification system?
A
Scientists can share information and research worldwide, to link organisms, in a universally accepted system.
5
Q
What are the 3 domains?
Define species
A
- Organisms split into 3 domains (Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya)
- As you move down the hierachy, there are more groups per taxonomy (making more organisms similar in characteristic)
- Ends with organisms classed as individual species
Species - group of organisms able to reproduce fertile offspring.
6
Q
How are humans classified?
A
Genus - Homo
Species - sapiens
Homosapiens
7
Q
How are organisms named?
A
Now binomial nomenclature is used
- 1st word, genus (family name)
- 2nd word, species (specific name)
- No 2 species have the same generic and specific name
- should be in italics or underlined if handwritten with a Captial letter at the beginning.
