Q
Describe the Cycle of Discrimination?
A
- An observed practice or behaviour is assigned to an entire group
- Stereotype: even positive stereotypes are problematic. Can lead to false dichotomies. One characteristic seems as evidence of lacking another characteristic
- Prejudice: the (un) assigned characteristic seen as making group members “a bad fit”
- Discrimination: group members are systemically excluded from certain activities and roles
- Reaction: frustrated by attempts to overcome exclusion, group members focus efforts on permitted activities and roles. This cycles back to more stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination
