Starting up at intersection : look left, right left. Check rearview mirrors.

When stopped in traffic : one car length space ahead of you is required. This allows you to pull around the car if it should stall and provides and instant cushion if the car ahead turns.

Count One-Two-Three after vehicle ahead has started to move : This step follows being stopped at an intersection behind another vehicle. Check rear-view mirrors.

Four to Six seconds following time for speeds under 30 MPH, 6-8 seconds for speeds over 30 MPH. : This prevents you from getting a fixation on the vehicle ahead and helps establish and maintain good eye-lead time.

8-12 Seconds Eye-Lead Time : Best way to keep your eyes ahead of the wheels and should be your visual focus most of the time.

Scan Steering Wheels : Look for signs of occupants, which could result in someone stepping out from a car or the car pulling from the curb.

Stale Green Lights : Establish a point of decision, an imaginary line between you and the crosswalk. Helps to get the big picture.
8.
Eye contact : When you must depend on someone along your driving path to stay put, communicating through the use of horn, lights, and signals is the one way to be sure they will not step into danger.
9.
Pulling from curb : glance over your left-hand shoulder.
10.
Use of mirrors : As a rule of thumb every 5-8 seconds.
