OECD compiles international league tables
These are accessible due to globalised media and communications
UK tends to be lower on these tables, so our government look to systems, countries that score highly (such as Finland and Singapore)
Influenced Michael Gove to borrow their contraversial Free Schools. Independant sate funded schools could be developed.
Attempts to get very successful graduatesband those with acadeic postgraduate qualifications into teaching to raise the status of the profession (reflecting countries like Finland and Sweden)
So globalisation has led to governments thinking about education as a global competition and creating policy accordingly
Developing policies to equip students for the modern workplace
One impact of globalisation is the tendency for manufactoring and other labour-intensive work to move to other countries with lower labour costs.
The impact is the lack fo jobs in the UK with no more than GCSE-level qualifications.
The response to this was making education compulsory to the ge of 18. New Labor aimed for 50% of school leavers to go to university.
The theory goes that despite the UK never beng able to compete with cheaply manufacture goods with other countries, it can compete in high-skill sectors and wit service industries, and that these require higher level qualifications
While some would suggest other policies seem tocontradict the logic of these policies (such as charging high university fees) there is a clear policy response to the process of globalisation
