10: Fractures Flashcards
What’s the problem with fracture healing in horses?
Slow, fatal contralateral laminitis, heavy weight compared to bones, proximal limb not amenable to implants
What are the conditions for successful fracture repair in horses?
Must be immediately fully ambulatory, tight fragment compression, articular surface reconstruction, remove all loose fragments
What can happen around long bone plates in horses?
Get glycocalyx
What happens to implants if they are not compressed tightly enough?
Will break
What should you do with metal plates in foals?
Remove after, esp if involving physis
What is first aid for a fracture?
Stabilise limb (make useable), immobilise down to foot and up to proximal joint
