10. Forces and motion Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
An object at rest will stay at rest and an object moving with constant velocity will continue to move with constant velocity unless an unbalanced force acts on the object
What does a resultant force do to an object?
It will cause the object to accelerate in the same direction as the resultant force
How do you find the resultant force of two vectors?
Add the vectors
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
The force needed to accelerate a particle is equal to the product of the mass of the particle and the acceleration used
F = m a
What is the equation for weight?
W = m g W = weight, m = mass, g = 9.8
What is Newton’s third law of motion?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
What are the rules for solving pulley questions?
Pulley is smooth
Tension in the string is the same on either side of the pulley
You can not solve the system as a whole
The system can only be solved in two parts
