10-Crusting, scaling, pustular and popular lesions Flashcards
T/F Pustules and papules are secondary lesions
False- they are ALWAYS primary lesions
Describe a papule
small solid elevation of skin <1cm diameter
Describe a pustule
Small (<1cm) skin elevation filled with pus
Fragile, so often short-lived so often see as crusts/ epidermal collarettes
Name an infectious cause of pustules/papules
superficial bacterial pyoderma/ folliculitis - esp dog and horse
Dermatophytosis - esp cat
Malassezia dermatitis - dog
Name a ectoparasitic cause of pustules and papules
fleas - dog, cat
surface mites
burrowing mites e.g. Sarcoptes
demodicosis - dog
If a pustule/papule is centred around a hair follicle what does this indicate
follicular disease
If the pustules/ papules are distributed around caudal/ dorsal trunk on the dog what is the likely cause
fleas
If the pustules/papules are distributed around Ventral abdomen, pinnal margins, elbows, hocks on dog what is the likely cause
sarcoptic mange
T/F Pyoderma affects the face/pinnea/head
FALSE - this is very unusual of pyoderma = indicative of autoimmune disease! (pemphigus foliaceous)
If lesions are at the same stage of development what condition should you consider
Pemphigus- as the lesions for this come in waves
What investigations should you pick for pustules/papules presentation?
Cytology (+/- bacterial culture)
Sample re ectoparasites
Sampled to rule out dermatophytosis
If there is no change after treatment of parasites/eliminating a secondary infection what investigation do you do next…
Skin biopsy
If after treatment of parasites/ eliminating a secondary skin infection what do you do next
investigate underlying immunosuppressive disease
Describe scale
dandruff
Rafts of immature keratinocytes which accumulate at the skin surface
what is scale due to
Due to hyperkeratosis (increased depth of cornified layer)
