Why do we need consent
Examination or treatment without appropriate consent is an invasion of privacy that may constitute assault
What are the different levels of consent?
Implied/verbal cconsent- non invasive procedure e.g. blood pressure
Express consent- for minimal procedures e.g. blood letting
Written consent for more serious exams- surgeries
Chaperones present for intimate exams-prostate
What is informed consent
Allowing the patient to be informed of the practicalities of the procedure, the risks/benefits and the benefit/risks if the procedure not done or refused.
What are two key things to do surrounding consent?
Review consent if period of time has passed after theyve agreed
Record consent to show it happend
What is capacity
A patients ability to understand, believe, retain and weigh up the necessary information
What are some obstacles to capacity
Impaired intellectual/mental capacity Intoxication (drugs or alcohol) Unconsciousness Communication difficulties Age
What is meant by Gillicks competence?
An ability of a child to give the necessary consent. The childs maturity and understanding and the nature of consent is required
