10 Flashcards
Dynamic equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium is set up when the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction.
The relative concentrations of the reactants and products remain CONSTANT
Only occurs in a fixed system.
Le chateliers principle
If the conditions of dynamic equilibrium in a closed system are changed, the equilibrium shifts to oppose that change
Effect of catalyst on equilibrium
A catalyst has NO EFFECT on the position of equilibrium
However, a system will reach equilibrium more quickly
Changes in concentration
Shifts right (favours products):
- If reactant is increased
- If product is decreased
Shifts left: (favours reactants):
- If reactant is decreased
- If product is increased
Changes in pressure
Only affects dynamic equilibria that contains at least ONE GAS
An increase in pressure favours the side with the fewest moles of gas.
A decrease in pressure favours the side with the GREATEST no of moles
Changes in temperature
An INCREASE in temp favours the ENDOTHERMIC reaction
A DECREASE in temp favours the exothermic
