10/12/22 - Unit Circle and Angles Flashcards
What is a unit circle?
A circle with a radius of 1 centered at the origin.
When an angle is positive, how do you draw it on the unit circle?
Start at the positive x-axis and go counterclockwise.
When an angle is negative, how do you draw it on the unit circle?
Start at the positive x-axis and go clockwise.
Clockwise = negative, counterclockwise = _____
Positive
How do you define an angle in a unit circle?
The amount of counterclockwise rotation needed to move the positive x-axis to the terminal leg of an angle.
If a point (x, y) is on the unit circle, then it satisfies x^2 + y^2 = 1.
Why?
Because the radius of the unit circle is 1. This is derived from the Pythagorean Theorem.
Is (1, 2) on the unit circle?
No, because it does not satisfy x^2 + y^2 = 1
